Alaska 2010 Season Overview

My 2010 Season started May 6th with spring brown bear. It was a very late spring and many bears were still in hibernation. I had just bought a new High Definition camera and I am sure glad I did, because I captured the best footage this season of any previous. My first hunter was Bobby Morgan of CA, who has a ton of Alaskan hunting experience. I don’t want to spoil my new Season 4, The Modern Day Mountain Man DVD, so I won’t spill all the details, but he had an unbelievable hunt that ended with him shooting a great Alaskan brown bear at less than 100 yards. I think his hunt contains my best brown bear footage ever. After Bobby left on May 15th, 3 fresh hunters came in; Jerry Tyrrell(WA), Ray Furman(BC, Canada), and coming as a non-hunting observer was Stan Lancaster(YT, Canada). Jerry and Ray are very accomplished hunters, and Stan is probably the most well known Canadian outfitter alive. He has been guiding hunters for over 30 years, so it was great for me to hunt with these guys and I learned a lot from them. It was a tough hunt, as the weather was less than optimal and the bear just weren’t popping out their dens like usual. In a typical season we would see 8-20 bears per day, but we were seeing 2-7 bears per day, and as it usually works, the big bears were too far or too high and moving the other way. We also had a 9 ½’-10’ bear right in front of us one morning, but he was BADLY rubbed. Late in the hunt both Ray and Jerry connected on good bears. Both guys made great shots. I can’t say that I have ever laughed so hard on any hunt in my life. These guys were a riot, and you will see that in the video.

After spending my summer back home in WI, where my bride and I had a little baby girl, Charli Grace Molls on July 12th, I headed back to the Brooks Range for sheep, grizzly, and caribou. It was a wet and foggy sheep season, but all 3 of my hunters, Mike Spencer(CA), Jaime Melendez(Spain), and Joe Kiselica (NY) all took DANDY rams and good caribou. Jaime also took a HUGE grizzly bear in a willow choked river bottom on what was a very exciting stalk. The rams my hunters took this year were the best of any season I have ever had. Mike’s was the largest I have ever had a hunter take, and they were all 11 ½ years or older. Great guys, great hunters, and despite the tough hunting due to the fog, they all persevered and made it happen.

As soon as sheep season was over I headed to moose camp in central Alaska. There the season is from September 5-25, so I had 2-10 day hunts. Once again, I had the pleasure of guiding 2 great hunters: Kelly Huffman(TX) and Jens Knudsen(Denmark). It was a season of extremes: First it was hot and it rained continuously for 4 days, and then it didn’t rain for the last 20 days and the temps just kept getting colder. By the end of the season the rivers were completely iced in and the last few flights out of camp had to be done with a wheel plane as the float plane had no open water. The hunting was tough, but so were my hunters. I have never sat on a hill and glassed for so many 15 hour days in my life! In the end it turned out to be a great and memorable season, but when the 0 degrees temps came and the river froze shut, everyone was anxious to head for home.

It was great to get home and see how much my little girl had grown. Her favorite thing is to watch the trees and leaves sway in the wind (I think I have found my future little packer???) All the above mentioned hunts are on my new Season 4, The Modern Day Mountain Man DVD, which is filmed entirely on HD and is well over 4 hours long. I am excited for everyone to see it, as I am confident that it is my best DVD by far. I am already excited for Season 5, as my editors and I, have come up with several ideas to make improvements.
