Fall 2009 - Full sized photos in the gallery!

The 2009 season was definitely one of my most enjoyable. I had some GREAT clients. Together we took some nice animals and had an absolute blast doing so.     I started out early Aug. in the Brooks Range for sheep, caribou, and grizzly. It was a COLD and windy fall, but we managed to do pretty well. On the first 2 hunts I had 2 new clients, Tom Wimberly (OR) and Tom Ong (TX); both harvested caribou and sheep. Lastly, my old friend Dave “The Alaskan Assassin” Casten (IA) came back up. He had severely injured his back a few weeks before his hunt, but he toughed it out and was able to kill a nice bou and grizzly. We saw a lot sheep that had been pushed down low due to the snow, but after a tough stalk on the grizzly bear, Dave’s spine literally looked like a question mark. I hope my hunting companion makes it back to those mountains he loves again in years to come.  washed my clothes took a shower,  got a greasy burger and a glass of milk, and was off to moose camp at 8 a.m. the next day. I hadn’t guided in this area for a few years, so it was great to be back. I guided Mauricio Trejo of Mexico on the first hunt. He was a character, to say the least! My ribs were glad to see him leave! Next, was Soren Poder of Denmark. I am always interested with the stories of foreign hunters, and these were 2 very accomplished hunters with plenty of material to work with. The weather was very warn to start, and then got bitterly cold at the end. Overall, we had to work our butts off to get close to the bulls, as they were extremely call shy. The biggest bulls we saw are still on the mountain somewhere, so I am excited to get back there to find them next fall.   Finally, in early October I went down to the Alaska Peninsula for Brown Bear, and man did we see bears!!!! Fellow guide, Jae McKee and I guided father and son, Ludek and Lukas Liska of The Czech Republic. I still don’t know how these guys were able to fit into a Super Cub. These boys are BIG! They were also in good shape. We were able to get 2 good bears in 3 days for these 2 deserving hunters. Great guys with a very rich hunting heritage; I hope to see them again next fall for sheep and grizzly. After almost 10 weeks, I made back home to Wisconsin. The honeymoon was over, as I was forced to immediately get back to work pounding nails. The inevitable onslaught of winter is a carpenters’ driving force that time of year. As I write this, I am hopeful that I am able to get out and chase some whitetails and sneak out to South Dakota to take my lab pheasant hunting.   I was able to capture 9 hunts on film this season, and I am excited to be producing my latest DVD, “The Modern Day Mountain Man, Season 3.” I have listened to all the viewers’ feedback over the past few years and I am confident that this will be my best video thus far. Thank you for your support and good hunting. Billy Molls
